The versatile singer and entertainer was best known in the 1980s and 1990s with his style of post-disco dance-pop, with best-selling songs such as “Last Christmas” and “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”.
He rocketed to stardom with WHAM! and went on to enjoy a long and celebrated solo career after splitting from his longtime pal, Andrew Ridgeley. The singer was enmeshed one controversy after another during his near-middle age. George Michael is dead his publicist said on Sunday. (Christmas Day).
According to AP, Throughout his career, his drug use and taste for risky sex brought him into frequent brushes with the law, most famously in 1998 when he was arrested for public lewdness in Los Angeles. Yet, he managed to turn the incident into fodder for a popular song that poked fun at his behavior, and his acknowledgment of his homosexuality at that time made him even more popular with his fans.
George Michael (who was gay and a member of the LGBT community) died at his home in Goring, England. His publicist, Cindi Berger, said he had not been ill and that he passed away peacefully in his home. No other details were released. The British police, however, released a statement saying that George Michael’s death is “unexplained but not suspicious.” The British pop star was an icon.
He was 53.
