US Govt Seals Arms Deal With Nigerian Govt To Fight Boko Haram

Buhari in military fatique

The United States government has agreed to sell high-tech military aircraft to Nigeria for its northeast campaign against the jihadist group Boko Haram. This comes as the Nigerian military has been claiming to have routed the jihadists (defeated Boko Haram and caused the Islamist insurgents to retreat in disorderly fashion).

According to Aljazeera (the Doha, Qatar-based state-funded broadcaster owned by the Al Jazeera Media Network), former US President Barack Obama had approved the arms deal but the sale was delayed after the Nigerian air force (mistakenly) bombed a refugee camp (Internally Displaced Persons) in January this year.

The deal comes as the US military hosts a conference of most of Africa’s defence chiefs in Stuttgart, Germany.
